Wow. The comments especially confirm my experience. It seems that it is not the commitment of the mother that should be at issue but the commitment of the firm to its employees. You can find varying commitment to a firm among all of the associates regardless of gender, age or parent status. But the fact that most big firm partners don't expect that a mom can handle the job makes that woman's success inachievable.

Absolutely! I feel like I have to keep it a secret that I love my baby and that she is my number one priority, but my male colleagues are allowed to openly proclaim their love for their kids and no one assumes they can't cut it. Even more appalling is that it was a woman who asked the question. I think the prior generation had to fight to get all of us where we are, but they also judge because many of them had to choose and it is hard for them to see progress in the creation of an environment where we respect parents as important contributors to our society.
